Carolynne Lord
Senior Digital Sociologist
UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH)
Dr Carolynne Lord is a Senior Digital Sociologist based at the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH). Her research focuses on technological sustainability, exploring this through an angle of use, provision, policy, and practice. This involves exploring the system dynamics that shape technological and infrastructural provision and use, recognising these as a product of design, demand, governance, and disposal.
Alongside colleagues, Carolynne is especially interested in how we can leverage systems thinking and the cross-disciplinary expertise at UKCEH to better understand the whole system impacts of data centres. Her work argues that if we want to intervene and aim for more sustainable data centres, we must follow their resource costs and better understand their implications on the environment (e.g., carbon emissions, biodiversity, water quality) and society (e.g., pollution and resource scarcity impacts on communities). This is especially important as her previous research has evidenced that some forms of large-scale infrastructure demand are wasteful in not outweighing costs through their value.
